Back to Plato from Ortega’s view: the tragicomic interpretation of life

At the end of Plato ́s Symposium Socrates states without further clarification that the author of both tragedy and comedy is the same man. According to Ortega, this thesis is the seed of the modern novel, and the first one was Cervantes’ Quixote. This paper shows the core of Ortega’s interpretation of Quixote and proposes, from this point of view, a hermeneutic of the enigmatic socratic phrase from Ortega ́s metaphysical height, very different from heideggerian thought and sartrian existentialism

Hyaluronic acid: perspectives in upper aero-digestive tract. A systematic review

    Get PDF
Background: To date, topical therapies guarantee a better delivery of high concentrations of pharmacologic agents to the mucosa of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT). The use of topical drugs, which are able to reduce mucosal inflammation and to improve healing tissues, can represent a relevant therapeutic advance. Topical sodium hyaluronate (SH) has recently been recognized as adjuvant treatment in the chronic inflammatory disease of the UADT. Aims: The aim of our work was to review the published literature regarding all the potential therapeutic effects of SH in the chronic inflammatory disease of UADT. Methods: Relevant published studies were searched in Pubmed, Google Scholar, Ovid using ("sodium hyaluronate" and "upper airways") or Medical Subject Headings. Results: At the end of our selection process, sixteen publications have been included. Six of them in the post-operative period of nasal-sinus surgery, 2 of them in pediatric patients affected by recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, 4 of them in reducing symptoms and preventing exacerbations of chronic upper airways in adult population, 4 of them in patients with chronic inflammatory disease of UADT, including gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). Conclusions: Topical administration of SH plays a pivotkey role in the postoperative phase of patients undergoing FESS and nasal surgery, and positive results are generally observed in all the patients suffering from UADT chronic inflammatory disease

Students mental representations in classical mechanics: three cases

We based our study on the Mental Models Theory proposed by Johnson-Laird. College students were observed during two semesters with the objective of determining the type of mental representation that they would have used during the course, when they solved the problems and conceptual questions included in the instrutional tasks. In addition an interview was carried out at the end of the course with the purpose of finding additional elements that would allow us to infer mental models on concepts used by the students in the elaboration of their answers. The results of this research suggest the importance of the mental models in the understanding of the physical concepts. It seems that the more " elaborated " the mental models are, the more easily the students understand situations and contexts different from those worked in classroom. This paper complements another one in which we presented the categories we arrived: propositionalists, propositional modelers and imagistic modelers. Each case we describe here illustrates one of these categories

Towards an unified information systems reference model for higher education institutions

Higher education institutions are currently facing many challenges that are making them to start compete strategically, like other not-for-profit firm. To adequately support such new approach, their information systems and business strategies should be totally aligned. However, the current existing landscape of heterogeneous information systems and applications deployed in many institutions can compromise such aim. Recently, reference architectures and models have emerged as instruments suitable to help company’s decision-makers to cope with such tensions. However, whilst many of such architectural models already exist for several industries, little has been done so far in higher education. In this paper, we briefly review major existing developments in such way before to inductively derive a unified information systems reference model tailored for higher education institutions.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
